These are actions, appearances, gestures that humans do that are mimicked in a virtual world. They are not human beings but digital characters. For better performance, the quality of the digital being is lowered to allow for better performance. More better synthetic humans you need better rendering in real time. In real time it is more difficult because it needs to be re-drawn every second. But if it is a still image it doesnt use nearly as much data.
Moore's Law:
Moore's Law is a law that has been holding true for a long time. Basically GPU power doubles every 9 months and every 18 months the CPU power doubles.
GPU:
Graphics Processing Unit. This is a dedicated piece of hardware specifically for handling graphics. These double in power every 9 months according to Moore's Law.
